Microsoft’s Browser Comeback
Microsoft’s browser market share has increased 3x over the past 4 years off of a low base. Today it seems that Google’s Chrome has a lock on internet browsers with nearly 80% share. But it’s worth remembering that 4 browsers have had more than 50% share over the years: Mosaic, Netscape, Internet Explorer, and Chrome. So anything can happen.
Microsoft’s recent gains have come at the expense of Chrome and have been entirely on the desktop. The reasons for the gains appear to be better integration into the operating system, faster speed, and user curiosity about AI tools. That being said, Microsoft has a long road back. Do people even know what Microsoft Edge is?
